Unless you are a professional chime player (chimist?), have an especially large ensemble, perform in an acoustically poor hall, or use chimes every day in every piece there is no need to pay more for chime hammers. These Vic Firth Soundpower Chime Hammers are more than sufficient. Can't beat the price. The "soft" end is merely a piece of felt. We seldom use this end so it should last quite a while. If it does wear out - just paste another piece of felt. Felt (no pun) these were a great buy.

Used these at school for concert band. After roughly a year, the felt started to wear off, so the soft side wasn't good for playing. Solved this problem by putting new felt on with heavy-duty double-stick tape. Not phenomenal mallets, but our class has gotten good use out of them. If you're prepared for this problem, you should have no issues.
