The head is probably smaller than you'd expect. The shaft is also a little longer than I had expected, and they're quite light. My favorite thing about them, however, is that, similar to the Van Sice marimba mallets, you can angle up and create a completely different sound. They do get a grey band of use rather quickly, but mine sound great still after having them for over a year and using them almost every day for hours and hours. I am currently - and slowly - completing my set of this lineup. I have the hards, medium softs, and soon, the softs. The medium softs are also very good, but I find myself always going the hards more as I can always angle up to get a softer sound if needed. However, I will say, the medium softs are very good as a bass mallet in a graduated set.
