Description
This piece pays homage to two musical sources. The first and most obvious is the timpani solo from the first movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony. The second more obscure homage starts at measure 10. This is an opening ostinato played by legendary jazz pianist Les McCann at the beginning of his piece "Compared to What" from his album "Les McCann and Eddie Harris Live in Montreux Jazz Festival 1969".
