These mallets are well-balanced and -weighted. My first use of them was playing Pirates of Penzance, and these were perfect for Modern Major General. (As an aside, it's possible a slightly harder mallet might be desirable for that tune on a rosewood instrument, but I used a synthetic-bar Adams xylophone and they were ideal). There's only a slight difference in sound between these and the CL-X5s, but the head is smaller and the feel is different.

The brass inserts give these mallets a big, full sound, even when playing from a low striking position, so you don't have to sacrifice volume when playing at fast tempos.

While there is a full sound, the overtones at better heard here than with the CL-X5. This is a great mallet for any piece where the xylophone needs to jump over a big ensemble and blend at the same time. This is too much for a small ensemble. These also make crotales project more like chimes and it's awesome.

A slightly fuller sound than the red ones. Can put a bigger sound on exposed excerpts with these.

These mallets are great for making lighter, more playful excerpts easier to play. They have a nice front end on the sound even at soft dynamics but are weighted nicely so they still get a full sound out of the bars for louder playing. Many friends of mine that try these out comment on the way these mallets sound and feel.

Smaller heads than the usual 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 give a very clear, lively sound, even on narrow bars. The brass weights in the cores bring the weight up to what is pretty typical of plastic mallets. They feel awesome. These navy blue ones are not quite as hard as a "Hard Black Plastic Mallet" available from many companies, but are tough enough for crotales, and have that brittle xylo sound for Saint-Saens "Fossils".
