I had been playing the Good Vibes Gary Burton mallets for ages, and was looking for a replacement. Prior to purchasing these mallets, everything I tried was either too soft and lacking in definition, or too hard and clanky sounding. These Jerry Tachoir mallets are the closest I have found to being a nice general usage mallet. Nice sound and feel.
The JT23's are a good all-around medium mallet in terms of attack and tone: nice attack, nice tone across the full range - could use a bit more low-end depth, but the mallet head is small-ish so that's to be expected. My main issue is the mallet handle: the Innovative rattan handles are quite 'springy' and feel a bit odd when attacking. It's taken some getting used to, and I still prefer the more solid, old-school rattan from approximately 20 years ago. Maybe rattan is now 'synthetic'? Not sure, but brand-to-brand they are different. The aging mallets I was looking to match/replace are Good Vibes Mike Manieri (now made by Malletech, but not a very good match and sound very different compared to the GV) and Gary Burton models (now made by Vic Firth: I tried these and returned them, they are not a good match to the GV's). They are considered "medium", so that will give you a general indication of where my playing lives. And the old-school rattan handles just feel better: thinner, more solid.
