Evans EMAD Batter Calftone Bass Drum Head - Product Information

The Evans 56 Calftone EMAD Bass Drum Heads are a throwback to the mid-century drum heads. Through modern manufacturing techniques Evans has revitalized and improved upon their original idea. These bass drum heads will have a modern feel and durability with a vintage warmth favored by jazz and show drummers of the era. These bass drum heads will project with the excellent tight bass frequencies. Evans has incorporated the tuning range and consistent fit of the Level 360 Technology in the Calftone Series.

Externally Mounted Adjustable Damping (EMAD) system allows the player to adjust attack and focus without removing the drum head.

Evans Drum Head Company invented the synthetic (or plastic, or polyester) drum head in 1956. Chick Evans was the first person to use polyester film to form a drum head. The end results were successful in creating a weatherproof head This ultimately changed the drum world forever. Chick's accomplishment is clearly substantial in letters and documents on record, dating back to the 1950s. The plain truth is, Evans was the "The First".

calftone emad 26

Comments:

I use clear emad exclusively for my bass drums. I recently bought a 26" calftone emad. Decided to change it up. All I can say is WOW! Nice big open and controlled, what you expect from an emad, with more warmth. Love it! That vintage tone with all the modern technology. Just get one and try it. Its awesome.

Finally found something I really like

Comments:

I've tried so many different ways of dampening my bass drum but I finally found something I like. I don't have to take off any heads or shake the bass drum to get the thing I'm using in the right place. Takes five seconds to choose no dampening, slight dampening or a lot since it comes with two different felt rings. Right now I also have a resonant head with a small felt ring, but I'm guessing it would sound good either way. I have an 18" bass drum so this new system makes my life a lot easier for changing my tuning and dampening for when I want to play jazz, rock, or something else. One other plus, my bass drum is a lot lighter since the dampening rings are so light. Wish I had these when I started, would have saved a lot of money and time in the past 20 years.

Evans Calftone BD Heads are the Real Deal

Comments:

I am always apprehensive about buying heads that I have not used before. I feel that the online demonstrations are all but useless given the fact that all the variables, drum make, sticks used, tuning methods and recording quality never give a true representation of the sound. This is especially true with heads designed for jazz as most reviews are done by rock drummers. I have to say that I am extremely pleased with these heads and are the closest to calfskin that I have heard. My first gig with them was with saxophonist Harry Allen and they fit the situation beautifully. They are a great alternative to calf without the hassle.

Perfect sound

Comments:

Yep. Evans figured it out this time. If you want your bass drum to have a beautiful resonant tone thats short and fat enough for most any musical situation, this is it. Good luck finding a better bass drum head.
