I needed a bop sized kit and after doing my research I went with the Midtown and I couldn't be happier. The construction is impressive at this price point and the Pearl hardware is really solid even at this level. They look and sound like a more expensive kit. Because I play brushes a lot, I replaced the snare and toms batters and figured I would decide about the reso heads and bass heads and snare wires later. I'm glad I saved the money since I've left everything stock. And it's all wide open....no tape or moongel and the only thing I added was a kick pad just to get a little more attack on the bass. Before I purchased it three things concerned me: the 13" snare size, the 16" bass size, and the bass and floor tom only having 6 lugs. I thought the snare might be a little small for brushes and be limited on its range but I don't miss the extra inch and it has a full tuning range. I've played 18" bass drums before and thought this might be undersized, but it can be a beast. I started tuning it by just adding a half turn past flop and it had a really surprising output....literally shaking pictures on the wall. I tuned it high in a jazz range and it held a really nice tone. The six lugs turned out to be a non issue as well. I guess it's a sign of the quality of the hardware but everything tunes up quickly and more importantly stays there. I really can't come up with anything bad to say. If I had to nitpick I'd like to have the floor tom legs a little longer. I'm 72" and I like my drums to sit high and the legs only have a little extra to spare. Other than that, I'm thrilled to get this kit at this price.
