Comments:

With "Musical Time," Mr. Soph leads the newbie jazzer in a progressive, digestible, course toward playing shuffle and swing rhythm with the "correct" feel and sound. No doubt he has noticed, as many drum teachers have, that learning to phrase the swung triplet smoothly while simultaneously maintaining a strong quarter note pulse requires both a certain amount of "chops" and lots of auditory awareness. A lack in either one can hijack the whole thing very quickly. This book helps students solve both problems by describing in detail the PHYSICAL MOTIONS required to get the SOUND. If you're looking for fills and clever sticking combinations and lots of groove patterns in various styles, this is not your book. This book is about the most important part of jazz (or any) drumming: playing a consistent, swinging pulse with a good sound and appropriate dynamics. The CD provides excellent examples of an authentic sound and feel to shoot for. You can listen and then imitate, or play along and try to match. Never having met Ed Soph, but having perused a few of his books (and the great Musical Time DVD), I view him as a very thoughtful teacher, who finds logical methods and presents them clearly and in detail, giving the student the opportunity -- should they choose to accept it -- to do the real work of learning to play well.
