Bosphorus 20" Master Vintage Series Ride Cymbal - Product Information

The Bosphorus Masters Vintage 20" Ride exhibits a dark, warm, low-pitched cymbal that produces a generous cushion of sound. The ping is a mellow, woody, "slap" and the cymbal body has a soft, giving feel when played. A wash of smoky undertones support the stick definition even during up tempo passages. A characteristically small, shallow bell along with a slightly curved profile recreates the historic sound commonly found in jazz, blues, and big-band music from the 30's to the 60's.

The search for vintage cymbals has finally ended. Other cymbal companies have tried to recreate sounds from the past but only Bosphorus has succeeded with their Masters Series. First, like all Bosphorus cymbals, they are completely hand made from the casting process through the final hammering (not one hammer mark is made by a machine). Second, the alloy is from an ancient formula passed down by first generation cymbal smiths which give these instruments a soft, "played-in" feel. Finally, these cymbals are much thinner than today's heavier weighted cymbals. Simply put, today's medium weight is much heavier than a medium weight cymbal in 1950. Another testimony to their weight is the characteristic "ripple" made by the cymbal's edge when played. The Masters Series includes rides, flat rides, and two distinct hi hats perfect for recreating the sound and atmosphere found on jazz, blues, and big band stages and recordings.

Comments:

If the rating scale gave '10' as an option, this would fit. I admit I am a bit bias towards Bos pies. I have been playing 52 years (since I was 12, now 65yo), and have tried the 'big 3' over the years. Nothing plays better than a hand-made Turkish pie, and Bosphorus tops them all. I have a complete set-up of Master Vintage pies, and NOTHING bakes better. Not for the heavy-hitter, metal player, but IDEAL for low-acoustic venues, jazz, bop, and church. The dry woody 'slap' or 'click-click-click sounds delicious in all these genres, even funk and hip-hop. Stay away from the computerized, machine guided lathing and cymbal presses. Go Bosphorus for true tonal quality.
