I recommend using hairspray to slip the grips on the shafts. This is what we use in the bike shop to install handlebar grips. I would be wary soaking my expensive timp mallets in water. Just shoot the spray into the grip and on the shaft and skooch it on, wipe off excess and let dry.
Put some hand soap and add water in a cup. Stir them around. Then, soak the entire green rubber mallet grips inside. Soak the bottom part of mallet as well, and put the mallet grip. Use a hand towel since both mallet and hands become very slippery. Let the mallets bounce as much as you can like a basketball or a ping pong ball. Hope this helps and enjoy!

I highly recommend these green rubber mallet grips for any timpani mallets (bamboo, carbon-fiber, and wood)! Although it is very stiff to put these mallet grips together on the mallets, it becomes easier after adding some soap water inside of the mallet grips by using pinky fingers. It is important to make the inside of the mallet grips smooth first. There is a huge difference between having these mallet grips or not on the mallets, and of course you will enjoy a lot by using them :)
