Puresound Twisted Series Snare Wire

Other comments here do not review these wires the way they are intended to be reviewed. Puresound designed the Twisted wires to have a washy sound, and they provide just that. These wires may not be the best option for swing, but an excellent choice for cool jazz and any styles that utilize brush work. If you combine these wires with a coated head and play with brushes, you will hear the difference as clear as day. You can attain clear articulate brush strokes on a tighter setting, and create a wall of washy sound on a lower setting. The wires don't sound great if your snare side resonant head is tuned higher than the batter head, but that one is just my personal preference. If you're playing pop, hip hop, rock, etc., these wires may not be for you. Great for softer jazz and Afro-Cuban styles!

I have been playing for several decades and know how to tune my drums but the sympathetic snare buzz was off the charts. The snare itself sounded excellent and the snares responded just as described on the Puresound site. However, switching to different snare wires and getting rid of these was a no-brainer.

I ordered these expecting that they would have a drier sound than standard wires, as the Puresound site ad seems to indicate. Not so. The twisted wires are of different guages, so no matter how much tension you put on them, the largest guage wires will contact the head, but the light guage will not. This results in a perpetual jangling, or buzzing effect (like sizzle cymbals) that I did not want. I wanted something closer to a dry orchestral sound, and this is 180 degrees opposite. The Puresound site does not explain this at all.

I used these on an old Ludwig steel snare with renaissance batter and resonance heads. These snares are phenomenal. Best part is, EXTREMELY RESPONSIVE!!! As quiet you can play and every tap is heard. Great snares.
