Vic Firth American Classic 5A Drumsticks with Barrel Tip

I've used the 5A's before. The feel was good, just the sound was lacking. I got these for pep band last Spring (2016) and man was I impressed. The feel of the wood grain was great, the sound from the barrel tip gave a better sound, and one pair lasted almost all season.

The first thing I noticed was the wood, the quality of wood is just awesome. It looks darker than other models I have bought in the past. The wood feels so smooth and has a look like a shadow on it. Hard to explain but they are just good to look at. I A/B'ed the tip from a regular 5A, the pitch is the same but the barrel had a slightly more focused sound, woody, not pingy like a ball tip. The regular 5A tip has a rounder sound, but the barrel would be identical to a non-trained ear. Also the barrel was not light up front like the tear drop tip 5A's are, eventhough the tip is smaller they felt more front heavy than a regular 5A. Now the weight is not up front but I think the overall balance from front to back gives it this feel. Man, you can just fly through flam rudiments, all the Swiss rudiments just speak with so much ease. Doubles are smooth, singles sound great at all dynamic levels, and buzz rolls, (alas Art Blakey)...just tearing up some paper sounds.... Playing fast ride patterns, if I moved my hand forward a little toward the tip, the stick would balance out nicely to just burn. On slower ride patterns moving my hand a little to the back of the stick allowed me to really dig in. Playing around the kit is where those tips really shine, and the balance feels so good you just don't want to put them down. So there you go, the wood is higher quality than I have ever seen of late. Also the sticks did not feel too hollow, almost like they are leaving a little more moisture inside. I ordered a brick, so you get your heavy pair, mid-heavy, and light heavy, as usual but each stick matched the other one perfectly. Vic's bricks are done like that on purpose; I always pick out the heaviest pair for practice, next heaviest pair for my backpack, and the rest in the stick bag.
